strumming
Classical guitar music is that which is associated with the Spanish or Classical guitar. For non-musicians, the classical guitar would look like a normal acoustic guitar. Classical guitars are usually made with a dark caramel coloured wood (usually ebony or rosewood on the face or front of the guitar), and with a requisite sound hole, neck and strings common to all acoustic guitars. Classical guitars are often the first guitar a student uses to learn how to play, as they are inexpensive (compared to electric guitars), lightweight, and easy to use (there are no complicated wires or buttons which need to be fiddled with, providing the instrument is already in tune).

Classical guitar music has been around for centuries, and today is often associated with singer-songwriters and acoustic performances. Due to its versatility – when played properly it can provide melody and rhythm to a song – it is often one of the first instruments a musician will learn (followed by piano and drums), and it is a good introduction to other string instruments such as the banjo, ukulele or double bass. As with all guitars and most string instruments, the playing technique is that of plucking and strumming one or all of the strings at one time.

The plucking technique is not difficult to learn – it involves holding a string down at a certain point along the fret board and plucking. The higher or lower the string is held down on the fret board determines the note which is played. Strumming involves holding several strings down at various positions while strumming over the sound hole with the end result being the playing of a chord sound.

Good guitar teachers will be able to play any type of guitar and should have this option available to you if you wanted to have a go at classical or electric. There can be quite a bit of kit to carry around so most teachers will have a small van with suitable insurance to cover all the equipment. Budget van insurance is recommended as their cover on personal items and equipment in the van is second to none.
